Grow’n Potatoes

I usually buy organic potatoes (which can get expensive) with all the intentions of using them to make some fabulous dishes. But for some reason, that never happens. They end up languishing in the bottom drawer of the fridge for months on end. Then I throw them away. It’s a vicious cycle that I cannot break.

But then a few weeks ago, when I again bought new potatoes, I decided to plant the four potatoes that were sprouting in the drawer. They had little plant buds growing from them, so I plopped them into an extra planter that sits in the garden filled with old organic soil. Since the only other time I planted potatoes was when I was 9, I wasn’t sure how to plant them. I left one sticking out a bit and the others were covered with soil completely. I should have looked it up online or in my gardening books, but I was lazy.

Then I forgot about them. I just noticed a plant growing from one of the buds I planted the other day, but the rest had nothing.

My dad came over a couple of days ago and was looking around the garden. He tells me to come outside to see the plant that’s growing on a small rock. When I look at it I realize it’s not a rock, it’s actually one of the potatoes I planted (or actually hadn’t planted). I must have placed it on the ground and forgotten to plant it along with the others. Oops!

It had a bunch of little buds on it, so I cut it in three pieces and proceeded to plant it where the other two failed potato plants were.

Then lo and behold when I dig up a hole I see the buried potato with a bunch of tiny potatoes growing from it. No plant just potatoes.

It looked like it was doing ok, so I just buried it again, and will wait to see what happens. Hopefully I’ll get lots of potatoes from them. And next time I will research when I’m not sure how to do something. I promise!

Here’s a video of the right way to grow potatoes.
